Groups aim to save Maui reefs
LAHAINA, Maui (AP) — A public-private partnership is seeking input on efforts to stop harm to West Maui’s coral reefs from damaging material that often runs into the ocean’s nearshore waters after storms.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and its hired consultants will hold a public meeting in Lahaina on Tuesday to review a draft Wahikuli-Honokowai Watershed Management Plan.
The meeting will focus on the plan’s strategies for managing pollutants and its approach to education and outreach.
West Maui Watershed and Coastal Management coordinator Tova Callender says the program is one of a few in Hawaii to look at helping coral reefs from a ridge-to-shore approach.
Inaugural Hana flight scheduled
HANA, Maui (AP) — The first scheduled flight to Hana in more than a decade will be taking off from Kahului airport.
It’s been 12 years since the remote, rural Maui community has seen scheduled air service. Driving from Kahului to Hana can take at least two hours.
The inaugural Mokulele Airlines flight will depart today after a blessing at Kahului airport. The new 20-minute, twice-daily flights come from a partnership between the interisland airline and Travaasa Experiential Resorts.
Hana resident and state Sen. J. Kalani English says the flights will provide a boost for Hana’s economy and its resort and spa, Travaasa Hana Maui.
Man surrenders after standoff
HONOLULU (AP) — Police say a man wanted on two warrants holed up inside his Kaneohe apartment for four hours before surrendering.
The deputy sheriffs went to the home of 46-year-old Lance Fox Saturday morning to serve the warrants, but Fox refused to accept them and stayed inside.
Officers from a Specialized Services Division unit were called at 10:30 a.m., and two negotiators with the Sheriff Division also responded.
Fox gave himself up at about 2 p.m. Fox has a lengthy criminal record, including convictions for unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle and promoting dangerous drugs.
Police say the man’s wife was also arrested and charged with second-degree hindering prosecution.
Police raid 6 Oahu arcades
HONOLULU (AP) — Honolulu police have raided six Oahu arcades to seize devices and records connected with suspected illegal gambling operations.
Honolulu police spokeswoman Michelle Yu said that nobody was arrested in the raids.
Yu says the operations resulted from information provided by people in the community.
Yu says police plan to release more details later.
Inouye: Cayetano transit would force federal delay
HONOLULU (AP) — U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye says an alternative transit plan introduced by Honolulu mayoral candidate Ben Cayetano would force federal delays for funding and send $1.55 billion in allocated funds back to the federal government.
Inouye said in a statement Friday that Cayetano’s plan for a bus rapid transit system would put Honolulu in the back of the line in terms of federal consideration.
Cayetano proposed the $1.1 billion system of express buses, contraflow lanes and underpasses as an alternative to a proposed $5 billion rail line.
Inouye says he doubts Cayetano’s $1.1 billion estimate for the alternative plan.
Hawaii’s senior U.S. senator says he’s confident Honolulu rail will get an agreement from the Federal Transit Administration by the end of 2012.
Cayetano faces former acting mayor Kirk Caldwell in November.
