“I am Working on It,” an exhibit by Sonja Henrixson, opens today with a reception from 5-7 p.m. at the Wailoa Arts Center.
The installation of sculptures and photographs is an exploration of memory and time.
Henrixson’s most recent work includes two sculptures, “going upstream” and “on the rocks.”
“Going upstream” is a time/memory curtain 15 feet long and 9 feet high. It is composed of 365, 11-inch-long, black duct-tape boats that zigzag up 20 lengths of black twine.
“On the rocks” is a hand-sewn 9-foot-long boat that lands softly on twelve black bed pillows.
Henrixson’s ironic black soft cloth boat, with an exterior pattern of soft round bumps and embroidered graffiti-like spirals, evokes the female body.

The personal narrative about boats originates with her father. He was a merchant mariner and loved the sea. When Henrixson was 13, he made her a boat that operated with two batteries and was water worthy. Her two older brothers did not receive a boat. It was a powerful moment for her and it remains a powerful memory.
