After missing its fair share of opportunities Sunday, the University of Hawaii women’s soccer team was busily working in the closing minutes of double overtime to avoid a draw. With one fine sprint, Cal State Fullerton’s Erica Mazeau sent the Rainbow Wahine down to defeat.

UH was less than 90 seconds from extending its school-record 12-match home unbeaten streak, but Mazeau scored in the 109th minute on a breakaway to give the Tritons a 1-0 victory at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium on Oahu.

It was the first home loss for the Rainbow Wahine (6-6-2, 1-2 Big West) since last August, though they had some prime scoring chances. Just moments before the game-winner, Chelsea Miyake hit the crossbar with a shot from 16 yards out. UH doubled the Tritons in shots (16-8), including 15-4 in regulation, many near the mouth of Fullerton’s goal. Miyake also had an attempt in the final 30 seconds of regulation sail just high. The ‘Bows had 10 different players take a shot, and Tiana Fujimoto put two on frame.

Lindsey Maricic made five saves for her second straight shutout. The Tritons (6-7, 3-1) have won three in a row, and in their inaugural trip to Hawaii they once again showed a flair for the dramatic. In a 1-0 victory against Cal State Fullerton on Friday, Mazeau assisted on a game-winning goal by her sister Jeanne in the first overtime.

Erica Mazeau did it all by herself Sunday. After a UH corner kick, the ball deflected to Mazeau, who covered about 60 yards by outrunning one defender and slipping another before putting a low liner past goalkeeper Kanani Taaca.

Taaca also made five saves for UH, which starts a two-match road trip at 4 p.m. HST Friday at Cal Santa Barbara.
