The film follows Iva and Marija, a lesbian couple, who rent an apartment in a seemingly quiet building in Zagreb. But what initially appears as a safe love haven quickly turns into a nightmare. The hostility and misery of the characters’ lives project vivid echoes of Croatia’s recent past as the country slowly emerges from years of ethnic violence during the Balkans war.
A winner of the Best Croatian Film Award, “Fine Dead Girls” has been named one of the best Croatian movies of the last decade and garnered much attention due to its controversial, provocative themes. The film is in Croatian with English subtitles.
The Global Lens film series continues each month with a different international film. Other films include Academy Award nominees for Best Foreign Language Film from Vietnam, Cuba, Uruguay, Brazil and Lebanon.
