HONOLULU (AP) — Two cannons dating to Hawaii’s revolutionary days have been returned to the Hawaii National Guard, but it took 117 years.
Company D of the National Guard of Hawaii received the cannons in 1895 when the islands were the Republic of Hawaii. They were stored for years at ‘Iolani Barracks before being turned over to the National Guard by the Hawaiian Historical Society.
Guard spokesman Lt. Col. Chuck Anthony says the cannons originally were part of the National Guard inventory, but he is not sure whether they were used or deployed.
The barracks were dismantled in 1965 and reconstructed at the current site on the palace grounds, where the cannons were stored under a portico before being moved to the Army Guard armory in Wahiawa.
