The Paradise Roller Girls will hold an exhibition bout at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

Tickets for “Gouls Just Wanna Have Fun” are $10 at the door. There will also be a junior derby at 5:45 p.m.

apparel fundraiser

The Hilo Athletic Committee in partnership with the Hilo High athletic department will hold its fall “Steakfry and Viking Apparel Fundraiser” from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 28 at the school in support of the school’s athletic department.

Kiawe-grilled steaks will be on sale for $8 per plate, along with Viking apparel, ranging from shirts and shorts to caps and old uniforms.

Ex-Vulcan coach

honored by NAIA

Former University of Hawaii at Hilo basketball coach Bob Wilson, athletic director at Vanguard University (Calif.), has been chosen as the NAIA’s national athletic director of the year.

In Wilson’s 17 years at Vanguard, the Lions have advanced 57 teams to NAIA national championship play and captured 11 conference titles and the school has had 149 All-Americans and 199 scholar-athletes.

Before taking over at Vanguard in 1995, Wilson coached the Vulcans for 10 seasons.

Boys and Girls Club

The Boys and Girls Club of the Big Island is opening baseball registration for boys and girls for the following age divisions: T-ball (ages 5-6), coach-pitch (7-8), Mustang (9-10) and Bronco (11-12). Space is limited.

Pahoa High School is accepting applications for a girls paddling head coach and a boy/girls tennis head coach.

Applications are available at the school’s main office, and the deadline to apply is Oct. 24.

football games slated

Alumni Football USA will hold the following four games involving Big Island high schools.

—Hilo vs. Waiakea, 7:30 p.m. Jan. 4 at Wong Stadium

—Kealakehe at Konawaena, 7 p.m. Jan. 5

—Honokaa vs. Kohala, TBA

—Keaau vs. Hawaii Prep, TBA

There are 40 spots available per team at a cost of $100. Alumni Football USA organizes and coordinates the games, and rental of professional helmet, pads and equipment, game-day EMTs, officials, announcers, field-liability insurance, DVD and commemorative T-shirts are covered by the entry fee. Some of the money raised will go back to the high schools.

Brantley Center benefit runs

The Brantley Center will host its inaugural 5-kilometer, half-marathon and 30K Waipio Challenge at 6:30 a.m. Oct. 20 in Honokaa.

The runs are a benefit for the Brantley Center, which has provided “services to the disabled community of North Hilo, Hamakua and Kohala for over 40 years,” according to a release.
