Rescuers located five hikers on Mauna Loa on Saturday after the group reported themselves lost.

Rescuers located five hikers on Mauna Loa on Saturday after the group reported themselves lost.

The group made a call for help via cellphone after returning from the summit.

They also said a sixth hiker had left the group.

The Hawaii County Fire Department responded at 5:37 p.m., and a helicopter located the group above a weather station.

Due to darkness and topography, the helicopter was unable to land.

The county fire fighters, along with fire fighters from Pohakuloa Training Area, were able to reach the hikers and transport them to the weather station.

The sixth hiker walked out on his own.

The hikers, ranging in age from early 40s to mid 50s, declined medical treatment.
