Zulu Nation Hawaii’s new radio project, Foundations Radio, is a two-hour weekly program airing live on the University of Hawaii at Hilo’s online radio channel, www.uhhradio.com, from 10 p.m.-midnight every Monday.
Its mission is to make use of the public airwaves to spread the message of hip hop’s positive values of peace, love, unity and respect, which are often overshadowed by negative images linked to the genre of popular rap music.
Foundations Radio producers Matt Burke, Ryan “Phreewil” Delora, Ngozi Gonzalez-Johnson and Mike Ito say they are utilizing “a deep-rooted local and international community network” to introduce to Hawaii “a new form of media intended to present hip hop in its true light and offer a forum for ideas seldom seen in mainstream programming.”
Show guests will range from musicians, visual artists and breakdancers to community leaders, college professors and local business owners.
“It utilizes Hawaii’s diverse wealth of fascinating residents to portray in their own word’s the far-reaching scope of hip hop culture’s influence and connection to some of the world’s most important issues,” said Burke.
“Hip hop doesn’t always boast the most sparkling image in today’s media system. While the public is bombarded with images of materialism, violence, drug abuse and sexism by popular rap music, The Universal Zulu Nation has been working for almost 40 years to contrast these stereotypes,” he said.
