Shih Ting Chen hammered 19 kills and Michele Tevaga added 14 to lead eighth-ranked Brigham Young University-Hawaii to a 25-23, 25-20, 25-9 sweep over the University of Hawaii on Friday night at Laie.

The host Seasiders (14-2 overall) improved to 9-0 in the Pacific West Conference volleyball standings. The visiting Vulcans dropped to 4-14 and 4-8, respectively.

“BYUH has a really good team and they make few errors,” UHH coach Tino Reyes said. “We played good in the first two games and then laid an egg in the third game.

“We played them tough in Games 1 and 2 but could never get over the hump when we needed a point. That’s been happening to us all along and why we haven’t been able to win the close games.”

Chen, a 5-foot-10 sophomore from Yunlin, Taiwan, had 19 kills with two errors in 34 attempts, a .500 hitting percentage. Tevaga, a 5-9 senior from Kahuku who started her collegiate career at Fresno State, had 14 kills with two errors in 20 swings, a .600 hitting clip. Setter Ying Chun Chen fueled the Seasiders’ potent offense with 41 assists.

Freshman Bria Morgan led UHH with 18 kills and nine errors in 51 attempts, a .176 hitting percentage. Sophomore Olivia Lane was next with four kills in 11 attempts with two errors. Freshman setter Jolie Au led the Vulcans with 24 assists.

For the match, BYUH hit .478 as a team while UHH hit .162.

Heading into Friday’s match, BYUH was tied with Fresno Pacific (16-1 overall) atop the PacWest standings with 8-0 records.

The Vulcans next host Chaminade University in a PacWest match at 7 p.m. Oct. 27 at the UHH Gym. Then after road matches at Hawaii Pacific University (Nov. 3) and Chaminade (Nov. 5), the Vulcans end their season with a home match against BYUH on Nov. 10.
