“Why should the kids have all the fun?” says “Rocky Horror” emcee Yisa Var. “Get your glitter on and come on down to the Palace Theater on Wednesday, Halloween night, for some grownup silliness at our annual ‘Rocky Revelry’ in downtown Hilo.”

The show starts at 9 p.m., but come around 8 p.m. for the costume contest and parade. Tickets are $12, but in costume, it’s $10. There will be prizes for the best costume, based on audience applause.

“Our mighty Palace Pipe Organ will be featured before the show,” said organist and “Rocky” enthusiast Rick Mazurowski. “I’ll be coming up with some great music to accompany the costume contest and parade.”

The “Rocky Horror Picture Show” began life as a musical in 1973 and was then made into a movie in 1975. At first, the showings were a complete bomb everywhere. Then, attentive cinema owners realized that the tickets they were selling were to repeat customers, many coming back as many as 20 times.

The “Rocky” cult was born.

In September of 1976, the show was shown at midnight at the Waverly Theater in New York and the now famous “audience participation” phenomenon began as the repeat movie goers started to talk back and yell things at the screen.

2010 marked the 35th anniversary of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” and the enthusiasm for this strange, but hilarious show only continues to grow.

The Palace Theater is happy to be a part of the ongoing cult celebration of “Rocky Horror” and invites the public to attend. Call the Palace at 934-7010 for more details.
