James Yamane, Rayden Bala and Lane Lorenzo each scored a goal to lead the University of Hawaii at Hilo to a 3-2 win over Holy Names University on Tuesday afternoon.

The Pacific West Conference men’s soccer match was played at the UHH baseball field.

The Vulcans improved to 4-8-2 overall and 4-7-2 in the PacWest. The visiting Hawks fell to 6-10-1 and 3-10, respectively.

“It was a good win and for the most part, we had control of the game all the way,” UHH head coach Ziggy Korytoski said. “We talked before the game how important it is for all of our players to produce a little more and I felt we did that today. We’re now getting goals from multiple scorers and that helps a lot.”

The Vulcans close out their season on Saturday, hosting Academy of Art University at 6 p.m. at the UHH baseball field. In the earlier women’s match, UHH battles the Urban Knights at 3 p.m.

“It’s the last game for our seniors and we hope the fans come out to show their support,” Korytoski said.

Yamane, a freshman forward out of Waiakea High School, opened scoring at the 5:59 mark off an assist from Xavier Fuerte to give UHH a 1-0 lead.

“That was Yamane’s first career goal,” Korytoski said. “It was nice to see.”

Bala, a junior and former Kealakehe High standout, then made it 2-0 at 28:56 following an assist from Ian Watanabe as the Vulcans carried a 2-0 lead into the intermission.

Holy Names responded with a goal from Tom Davies at the 66:09 mark to chop the UHH cushion to 2-1.

However, Lorenzo, a sophomore forward out of Kealakehe High, scored off a Bala assist at 76:34 to stretch the Vulcans’ lead to 3-1.

Davies scored in the 84th minute off a Jaume Phillips’ assist to make the final score 3-2.

Christian Muehlberge had the assist on Davies’ earlier goal.

“We settled down after they scored their two goals in the second half and were able to put the game away,” Korytoski said.

UHH junior goalie Yonha Adrabi played the full 90 minutes, allowing two goals and recording five saves.

Holy Names goalie Phillip Poser went the distance, giving up three goals to go along with five saves.

The Vulcans outshot Holy Names on goal 11-10, including 7-3 in the first half.

• UHH 2, Holy Names 0: Kristine Pasek and Analysa Rodriguez knocked in second half goals to lift the Lady Vulcans to a hard-fought win over the hustling Hawks.

The Unity Beddingfield-coached Vulcans improved to 5-11 overall and 4-9 in the PacWest. The Hawks dropped to 1-14-1 and 0-11-1, respectively.

Pasek, a sophomore forward from Apple Valley, Calif., scored at the 56:28 mark to break a scoreless deadlock and spark the UHH offense. Rodriguez, a junior forward from Chino Hills, Calif., then added her goal in the 88th minute to make it 2-0.

Sophomore goalie Breegan Saller recorded the shutout in net for the Vulcans. She had four saves while going the full 90 minutes.

Holy Names goalie Tiana Miyashiro gave up two goals and had three saves in going the distance.

“We had some opportunities in the first half that we weren’t able to capitalize on,” Beddingfield said. “But we finally got our rhythm in the second half and pressed a little more and played more with our feet. We also had some fun and continued to work hard to get the win.

“It was a good effort from the girls, and another solid effort by Breegan in goal.”
