Nineteen volunteers from St. Joseph School collected about 30 pounds of rubbish at Onekahakaha Beach Park on Sept. 15, as part of the Get the Drift and Bag It International Coastal Cleanup.
On the Big Island, the event was sponsored by The Ocean Conservancy and coordinated by the County of Hawaii Department of Parks and Recreation Aquatics Division.
Over the past 25 years, Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup has become the world’s largest volunteer effort for ocean health.
About nine million volunteers from 152 countries and locations have cleared 145 million pounds of trash from the shores of lakes, streams, rivers and the ocean on just one day each year.
