Hawaii Pacific University overpowered the University of Hawaii at Hilo 25-18, 25-22, 25-13 on Saturday night.
The Pacific West Conference women’s volleyball match was played in Honolulu.
The host Sea Warriors improved to 15-8 overall and 9-6 in the PacWest. The Vulcans fell to 4-15 andd 4-9, respectively.
“HPU played well and we just couldn’t keep up with them tonight,” UHH head coach Tino Reyes said.
Sanoe Recca led the Sea Warriors with 12 kills in 29 attempts with one error, a .379 hitting percentage. Elizabeth Culpepper followed with eight kills and Haley Doerfler added six as the hosts hit .270 as a team. Setter Kea Pihanakealoha had a match-high 30 assists.
Freshman outside hitter Bria Morgan led the Vulcans with 17 kills in 47 attempts with 13 errors, a .085 hitting clip. Patty Snel followed with seven kills in 22 swings. Snel also led with 11 digs and freshman setter Jolie Au had 27 assists and 10 digs.
UHH hit .075 as a team.
However, the biggest difference between the teams in the match was blocking. HPU dominated with four solo blocks and 23 block assists compared to the Vulcans’ 0 and 4, respectively.
UHH plays Chaminade twice on Monday, starting at 5 p.m. at McCabe Gym with the teams’ resumption of their suspended match due to the tsunami warning last Saturday at the Waiakea High gym. The Silverswords led that match 1-0 when it was postponed.
Then following that postponed match Monday, the Silverswords (6-14, 3-9) and Vulcans will battle right away in another best-of-5 match at McCabe.
UHH will close its season on Nov. 10, hosting conference powerhouse Brigham Young University-Hawaii at 7 p.m. at the UHH Gym.
