During the week of Oct. 29-Nov. 4, Big Island police arrested 28 motorists for drunken driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were under the age of 21.
The arrests by district were: Kona, 12; South Hilo, 11; Puna 3; Hamakua and South Kohala, 1 each.
So far this year, there have been 1,234 DUI arrests compared to 1,245 during the same period last year, a decrease of 0.9 percent.
There have been 1,230 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,165 during the same period last year, an increase of 5.6 percent.
So far this year, there have been 36 official traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared to 18 during the same period last year, an increase of 100 percent.
To date, 23 of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving: nine to related to drugs; four related to alcohol; and 10, a combination of both.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
