Waiakea High School celebrated its annual homecoming week, Waiakea Warriors … Yesterday, Today, Forever, on Oct. 9-12.
Spearheading the week’s activities were senior Jenna Murayama and her dedicated committee chairpersons.
Kicking off the week’s festivities was the presentation of the Homecoming Court, grand marshals, and the annual class competitions. Serving as Homecoming King and Queen were the Kuntemeyer twins, seniors Richard and Caitlyn; senior escort and attendant Marvin Agdeppa and Alyssa Franco; junior escort and attendant Jin Harbour and Kieran Cardoza; sophomore escort and attendant Cody Kojima and Kaydee Rapozo; and freshman escort and attendant Tre Soultz and Mikaela Martinez.
Grand marshals, selected by the homecoming committee based on their undying dedication to the student body and school, were social studies teacher Kelly Uyeda and account clerk June Wung.
Besides their role as educator and finance officer, they spend a lot of their free time supporting and assisting at student government and athletic events.
Although the emphasis on Homecoming Week is the uniting of the Warrior ohana, class competitions are the highlight of the week.
Students work tirelessly to impress the judges in the banner, gym decoration, shield, mascot, cheer, male cheerleading and parade competitions.
This year’s winners were: Banner — first, seniors; second, freshmen; Gym Decorations — first, seniors; second, juniors; Shield — first, seniors; second, freshmen; Mascot — first, seniors; second, sophomores; Cheer — first, freshmen; second, seniors; Male Cheerleading — first, seniors; second, juniors; Parade — first, seniors; second, sophomores.
Summarizing his first Homecoming in high school, freshman male cheerleader Royce Nuniez commented, “Homecoming was a great and exciting experience. I’m looking forward to the upcoming years to display how much spirit the Class of 2016 (boys) have. Winning the cheer competition was awesome!”
Homecoming T-shirts are still available for purchase by calling 974-4888, ext. 362. Cost is $10 and the design includes mascots from the Class of 2000 and up.
“This is one of the nicest designs I’ve seen. Incorporating the other years’ class mascots was a good idea, especially since the theme emphasized that we will forever be Warriors,” remarked sophomore class president, Dayton Towata.
Despite the homecoming game loss to Hilo High School, the Warrior spirit prevailed, ending Homecoming Week 2012 with the WHS letter lighting by the supportive football parents.
