LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) — A visitor from California was rescued while boogey boarding at Kealia Beach on Kauia.
The Kauia Fire Department says the 29-year-old visitor from Santa Cruz apparently suffered a seizure while boogey boarding on Thursday morning.
Fire Chief Robert Westerman says the man was boogey boarding with friends about 150 yards from shore in an area known as the “Broccoli Trees” when lifeguards noticed that something was wrong. They responded quickly when they spotted the man’s board floating upside down and in a manner that indicated he was attached and underwater.
The man was brought to shore and CPR was performed, which restored his breathing. He was taken to Wilcox Hospital and placed in intensive care.
