Four Mile debris cleanup a success

Four Mile debris cleanup a success

Nautilus Dive Center Inc. and Kids Dive In sponsored an underwater beach cleanup on Sept. 16 at Four Mile Beach (James Kealoha Park), Hilo. After a record turnout, the area is much improved.

Thanks to all the divers and surface support personnel. The haul was a truckload of trash, mostly beer bottles, but it also included soda cans, plastic and fishing debris.

Mahalo to all.

Hilo book sale nets more than $8,000

A big “thank you” to all the wonderful 1,600-plus book buyers who attended the Hilo Public Library Friends used book sale in October and boosted our revenues by over $8,000. The money goes back to the library for needs the state is unable to provide, such as: topographical maps, magazine subscriptions, computer software, books, young adult classics, and a popular Lego building contest this past summer in the Children’s Division.

We owe a special “mahalo” to Cher Hillier, volunteer coordinator, who schedules over 50 volunteers to man the sale, and to Sharon Vannatta and Helen Matsui, our fiction specialists. And a big hand to the volunteers, custodians, librarians and, especially, to the generous donors who helped stock the sale with numerous books of every variety.

The Friends are also able to fund another scholarship for a Library Information Science student at the University of Hawaii this year, our 12th year of sponsorship.

To all of you out there who contributed to the success of our sale — many, many thanks!

Jane Webb
