Rugby matches set

for Hilo, Waimea

An East Hawaii rugby team made up primarily of Hilo Reign players will face an all-star team from Australia in a 16-and-under match at 4 p.m. today at Hilo Bayfront.

The team from Down Under will move on to Waimea on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match against a team that will consist of players from the Kona Bulls and Waimea Boars.

The Reign, Bulls and Boars are all members of the Hawaii Youth Rugby organization.

AJA opening day

Sunday at Wong

The Keaukaha Warriors will begin their title defense Sunday when the Hawaii AJA Memorial Baseball League opens its 79th season at Wong Stadium.

Opening ceremonies start at 10 a.m., and the Warriors, under field manager Bo Saiki and coaches Keith Aoki and Chad Canda, along with RBI champion Kodi Medeiros (12) and league MVP and batting champion Avery Kagawa (.553) will be honored.

The other teams in the league are the Waiakea Pirates, led by field manager Shaye Miura and coach Onan Masaoka, and the Corsairs, with field manager Hito Oshiro and coach Dennis Sagawa.

Games will continue every Sunday until a best-of-three championship series, where one team will advance to the state tournament, April 12-13 in Honolulu.

Baseball camps slated

for winter break

Former major leaguer Onan Masaoka and former University of Hawaii at Hilo standout Shaye Miura will be instructing pitching and hitting during camps throughout winter break.

The two-day camps will be held at the MPRUV facility (140 Holomua St. in Hilo) and will consist of focused instruction on either pitching or hitting, and an introduction to baseball conditioning.

Each camp is limited to four participants.

The cost is $60 and includes 75 minutes a day of instruction, a T-shirt, and beverage.

Little League softball registration ongoing

Hilo Little League is holding registration for players, managers and coaches interested in girls softball in the ages 9-12 and 12-14 divisions.

The deadline for a manager or coach application is Feb. 15. Player registration and medical forms, proofs of residency requirements, and manager or coach applications can be obtained by visiting www.hilolittleleague.com or by calling 808-987-8469.

HI-Pal Winter

Basketball Classic

The Hawaii Isle Police Activities League and the Department of Parks and Recreation will hold its 32nd annual HI-PAL Winter Basketball Classic on Dec. 26-29 at various East Hawaii gymnasiums.

The deadline to enter is Dec. 14, and the fee is $80 per team, with a discounted $60 price for each team entering the 8-and-under category. A dinner banquet for all participating teams and a special skills challenge will held.
