“There will be lots of treasures to be found, so don’t miss out,” said congregation spokeswoman Helen Tupai. For more information, please call her at 982-4184 or email tupaiofc@gmail.com.

$20K raised for isle’s children

Throughout October, Ace store employees were tasked to ask customers if they would like to donate to the Children’s Miracle Network. The result: The $20,000 raised this year represented a 30 percent increase over last year’s total.

“We couldn’t be more proud of our team and their enthusiasm to help the children’s nonprofit. This enthusiasm could be felt in stores like Hilo Ace, where eight employees sold over 500 mobiles each,” said a company spokesman.

Two of the Hilo employees, Taryn S. and Margie N., amazingly raised well over $1,000 on their own.

“It is through people like them that CMN can continue to work towards its goal of supporting organizations and hospitals locally and take care of the communities’ children.”

Kelvin Nishiura, store manager of Hilo Ace, could not say enough about his team.

“My cashiers are super! They have the drive to be the best and it shows.” When asked how his group of super cashiers were able to do it, Nishiura didn’t hesitate to say, “They do it from their hearts and they really believe in what they are doing.

“From day one until the end they consistently asked the Hilo community to donate. Their passion was continuous throughout and when it’s for the children of Hawaii, it’s easy.”

As the holiday season shifts into gear, everyone is invited to join the Friends of the Zoo Animal Enrichment Team in spreading some “Christmas Aloha at the Zoo.”

Meet at the Primadome at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8, and watch volunteers give Christmas gifts to all of the community’s furry and feathered friends who live at the Panaewa Rainforest Zoo & Gardens.

“The public is invited to bring cameras and share in the spirit,” said Friends spokeswoman Nina Bremer.
