The Fairmont Orchid and the Pacific Island Printmakers will present their fifth annual exhibition of “Lei of Diversity.” The artists will include works focusing on the cultural and environmental diversity of the Hawaiian Islands.
The images reflect the daily inspiration offered by their lives in the islands, and draws on the historical roots of printmaking as a medium for communication and storytelling.
The Pacific Island Printmakers mission is to support printmaking as a vehicle for artistic expression, to foster collaboration and to stimulate members in exploring in new arenas. Members include Kathy Molina, John McCaskill, Margaret Barnaby, Nora Yamanoha, Lisa Adams and Andrea Pro.
The public is invited to an artists’ reception on Thursday, Dec. 13, at the Luana Lounge at the Fairmont Orchid. For details, call 885-2000. The show can be seen until March 10.
SJS gets $14K for healthy eats
St. Joseph School has been awarded a Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) grant totaling $14,000, according to Teresa Fuata, school lunch room coordinator.
Fuata said 100 percent of the awarded funds will go directly into running this program at the school. The FFVP provides all enrolled students in grades K-6 at St. Joseph School with a variety of free fresh fruits and vegetables as an afternoon snack, currently served on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
So far, the students have enjoyed bananas, tangerines, pears, red and green grapes, kiwi, apples, cantaloupe and honeydew melons. The federal program’s overall goal is to promote sound health and nutrition.
“It is an effective and creative way of introducing fresh fruits and vegetables as healthy snack options,” Fuata noted. “The fruits are served to the students in the classrooms and the teachers are also served through the program as they model healthful eating habits.”
The program is supported through nutrition education and physical activity in physical education classes. The Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service administers the program at the national level.
Within the state of Hawaii, FFVP is administered through the state Department of Education.
