During the week of Nov. 26-Dec. 2, 2012, Big Island police arrested 26 motorists for drunken driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 17; Kona, 6; South Kohala, 2; and North Kohala, 1.
So far this year, there have been 1,361 DUI arrests compared with 1,340 during the same period last year, an increase of 1.6 percent.
There have been 1,337 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,268 during the same period last year, an increase of 5.4 percent.
So far this year, there have been 37 official traffic fatalities compared to 19 during the same period last year, an increase of 94.7 percent.
To date, 28 of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving: 12 to drugs; four to alcohol; and 12, a combination of both.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
