During the week of Dec. 3-9, Hawaii Island police arrested 33 motorists for drunken driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 17; Kona, 9; South Kohala, 3; Puna, 2; Hamakua and North Kohala, 1 each.
So far this year, there have been 1,394 DUI arrests compared to 1,369 during the same period last year, an increase of 1.8 percent.
There have been 1,362 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,307 during the same period last year, an increase of 4.2 percent. So far this year, there have been 37 official traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared to 20 during the same period last year, an increase of 85 percent.
To date, 28 of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving: 12 to drugs; four to alcohol; and 12, a combination of both.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
