Panels meet on charter schools
HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii House and Senate Education committees plan to get an update on charter schools in the state.
The panels held an informational briefing Tuesday on the progress in implementing a measure establishing lines of authority and accountability in the state’s charter school system.
Sen. Jill Tokuda, who chairs the Senate Committee on Education, says the Legislature changed charter school laws last session with the goal of increasing student success. She says Tuesday’s hearing would provide an opportunity to gauge progress and to see what additional changes, if any, are needed.

on UH athletics
HONOLULU (AP) — The University of Hawaii plans a news conference Thursday to introduce its new athletic director.
Ben Jay comes from Ohio State, where he had served as senior associate athletics director for finance and operations since 2006. He was chosen by Manoa Chancellor Tom Apple to replace Jim Donovan.
Donovan was reassigned earlier this year after a bungled Stevie Wonder concert and athletic department fundraiser. He recently agreed to be athletic director at Cal State Fullerton.
This would be Jay’s first news conference since his appointment was announced on Dec. 7. His appointment is subject to approval by university system President M.R.C. Greenwood.
Weather service extends advisory
HONOLULU (AP) — A high surf advisory has been extended for east-facing shores of Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui and the Big Island.
The National Weather Service in Honolulu on Tuesday morning extended the advisory until 6 p.m. Thursday.
Forecasters say the high surf will produce rip currents and beach erosion in the advisory areas. Rough surf with waves of 7 to 10 feet is expected through Thursday afternoon.
Beach goers are being urged to stay out of the water. They also are being advised to stay back from shore breaks due to hazardous wave action and strong rip currents.
