Finding itself in a hole the entire match at Honokaa, Makua Lani kept pushing, three times cutting what was a two-goal lead to one.
All the while, the Dragons’ Monica Carlos single-handedly kept the Lions at bay.
The senior forward scored three goals, giving her eight for the season as Honokaa defeated Makua Lani 5-3 on Tuesday in a Big Island Interscholastic Federation girls soccer match.
The host Dragons (3-1) took a comfortable 2-0 first-half lead behind Daisha Acorda’s second goal of the season and Kelly Greenwell’s fifth.
From that point on, Makua Lani (1-4) got within 2-1, 3-2 and 4-3 behind senior Lauren Mabuni’s sixth and seventh goals of the season and senior forward Tiffany Nakamura’s fifth.
Carlos answered each goal with one of her own, with her last sealing Honokaa’s victory in the 80th minute.
Konawaena 1, Hawaii Prep 1: At Julian Yates Field, junior Rayne Izumi-Baltero scored her first goal of the season off a header from senior Saxon Nagata in the first half, tying the match for the Division I Wildcats (5-1-1) in a battle of first-place teams.
Freshman Marlie Mandaguit had given Division II Ka Makani (4-0-1) the lead with her fourth goal of the season.
Boys
Honokaa 2, Makua Lani 1: Junior Justin Warren scored off an assist from Seanry Agbayani midway through the first half, and the host Dragons also benefited from an own goal in the 50th minute before holding off the Lions and improving to 5-0.
Senior Elijah Lingenfelder scored his team-high eight goal of the season with about 15 minutes remaining for Makua Lani (3-3).
“It’s typical of our matches this year,” Honokaa coach Maurice Miranda said of the two-time defending Hawaii High School Athletic Assocation Division II champion Dragons. “A knock-down, drag-out fight. We’re playing good enough to win, but we need to get a lot better.”
Kealakehe 5, Parker 0: Junior midfielder Keoni Yates scored his second and third goals of the season and assisted on two others for the Waveriders, who led 3-0 after 18 minutes.
Senior Avery Hardie-Jordan added his eighth and ninth goals of the season, while Kyle Nickelsen scored his first.
Nick Joersz and sophomore Marc Takahashi each had one assist for Kealakehe (5-0).
Freshman goalkeeper Greyson Moore recorded the shutout against the Bulls (1-4).
Hawaii Prep 7, Konawaena 1: Senior Kepa Police scored three goals at Julian Yates Field, giving him eight for the season as the Ka Makani improved to 5-0.
Freshman Justin Perry added his third and fourth goals, while junior Jack Austin and senior Keisuke Ohtaka also scored for HPA, which led 3-0 at halftime.
Kai Dunston scored his second goal for Konawaena (3-2).
