The Hilo Community Players will present Shakespeare’s delightful comedy “As You Like It” in July 2013. The play was chosen by the community-at-large in HCP’s “Tribute Campaign,” which ended Dec. 1. Theater-fans were asked to earmark donations toward producing specific plays, and the play that garnered the most “tribute” was “As You Like It.”

The play follows two girls — wrongfully accused of treason — who disguise themselves as boys and hide out in a forest where exiled noblemen are living simple, peasant lives. The comic highlights include a lopsided wrestling match, a young man “publishing” his love poems on a tree and the famous speech that begins “All the world’s a stage.”
The Hilo Community Players have presented a Shakespeare play in downtown Hilo’s Kalakaua Park every summer since 1978, but have not performed “As You Like It” for more than 30 years.
Opening night will be July 5. Other evening performances will be given July 6, 12, 13, 18, 19 and 20. Matinees will be on Sundays, July 7 and 14. As always, admission is free.
