The Reed’s Island bridge in Hilo will be closed for four hours Dec. 28 as crews prepare to make repairs.
The bridge will be closed again from Jan. 14 until October as the work is done.
The aging span is being improved to allow it to carry emergency vehicles and better withstand earthquakes.
The $6.4 million project will involve replacing the wooden surface with steel beams and decking, adding concrete anchors to the foundation and installing lateral bracing.
The approximately 40 homes on the island, next to the Wailuku River, will be accessed by a detour over a gulch near Hale Street.
The project will increase the bridge’s load rating from six tons to 20 tons.
The bridge is accessed by Kaiulani Street.
From Jan. 2-3, there will be no on-street parking on Kilauea Avenue in Hilo between 8 a.m. and noon as a contractor grinds asphalt between Ponahawai and Pauahi streets.
