Kiaaina seeks to fill Senate seat
HONOLULU (AP) — The deputy director of Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources has applied for the U.S. Senate vacancy left by Daniel Inouye’s death.
Esther Kiaaina unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination for Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District earlier this year. Democrat Tulsi Gabbard went on to win the seat.
State Democrats plan to meet Wednesday to settle on a list of three candidates for Gov. Neil Abercrombie to consider.
Inouye had said his last wish was for U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa to succeed him.
A number of Democrats, including Hanabusa, Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz and former U.S. Rep. Ed Case, are seeking to be considered.
Big waves are in store for holiday
HONOLULU (AP) — Oahu surfers are going to get some big waves for Christmas.
The National Weather Service says waves on north-facing shores will reach 14 to 20 feet by Christmas morning, and those on west-facing shores will reach 10 to 15 feet.
Surf along the island’s south-facing shores could occasionally reach a much more moderate 4 feet today.
The big waves should be diminished by Thursday, but forecasters say the surf again will rise as waves from another storm arrive. Surf from that storm will peak Thursday night into Friday.
Maui firefighters issue warning
WAILUKU, Maui (AP) — The Maui County Fire Department is warning people to be extra careful this New Year’s when setting off fireworks given the potential for wildfires because of persistent drought conditions.
Capt. Paul Haake of the Maui Fire Prevention Bureau says the past year has been very dry and the threat from wildfires is a major concern.
Fireworks for New Year’s celebrations go on sale Wednesday.
Fireworks and firecrackers will be allowed from 9 p.m. New Year’s Eve to 1 a.m. New Year’s Day.
