SAN ANTONIO (AP) — A federal judge from Hawaii is moving to Texas to help put a dent in the huge caseload of San Antonio-based federal judges inundated with immigration and drug cases.
U.S. District Court Judge David Alan Ezra starts Jan. 2. The 65-year-old Ezra has taken senior status, a kind of semi-retirement, and told federal court administrators he was willing to leave Hawaii and take on cases elsewhere.
The Western District of Texas covers a wide area from Waco to El Paso. Some 2,000 civil and criminal cases have been filed in the district this year alone.
Ezra’s not entirely new to San Antonio. He graduated from the city’s St. Mary’s University in the 1960s.
He was appointed a federal judge in 1988, making him the longest-serving federal judge in Hawaii.
