Edwin Akio Hoshida, 79, of Hawi died Dec. 17 at Kohala Hospital. Born in Kohala, he was a retired auto mechanic, former scout master for the Boy Scouts of America, U.S. Army Vietnam War veteran, former Hawaii Army National Guardsman and member of Big Island National Guard Retirees Association and American Legion Kohala Post No. 4. Visitation 8-10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5 at Gospel of Salvation Church in Kokoike, Kohala. Memorial service at 10:30 a.m. Graveside urn committal service at noon Monday, Jan. 7 at West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery in Kona. Casual attire; no flowers. Survived by wife, Margaret Hoshida of Hawi; daughter, Naomi Hoshida of Hawi; sons, Earl Hoshida and Aric (Shaelyn) Hoshida of Hawi; brother, Stanley (Lynn) Hoshida of Las Vegas; two grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Lawrence “Hawaiian Eye” Kahikina, 88, of Southbridge, Mass., formerly of Laupahoehoe, died Dec. 25. Born in Hilo, he was a retired construction worker, member of Teamsters Union Local No. 170 and served in the U.S. Merchant Marines during World War II. Services held. Survived by wife, Jeanne C. (née Lamothe) Kahikina; daughters, Michele S. (John) Morrill, Gisele C. Kahikina and Cheryl J. (Carlos) Marcano of Southbridge, Donna Miller of Sturbridge, Mass.; sons, Troy M. Matthew Don Kester, 56, of Hawaiian Beaches died Dec. 25 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Chicago, he was a forklift operator. Visitation 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5 at Hilo United Methodist Church.
