HONOLULU (AP) — A Maui state representative is among the applicants seeking to succeed Shan Tsutsui in the Hawaii Senate.
The Maui County Democratic Party says state Rep. Gilbert S.C. Keith-Agaran is one of six applicants who qualify for consideration. Candidates must be in good standing with the Democratic party and live in Senate District 5, the district Tsutsui represented.
The other applicants are Loretta Giannotti, Robert George Hill III, Natalie Kama, Clifford Libed, and Mary Wagner.
Tsutsui left the Senate last week to become lieutenant governor after Brian Schatz was chosen to succeed the late U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye. Democrats plan to meet Saturday to devise a list of three candidates to send to Gov. Neil Abercrombie, who will make the final choice.
The next legislative session begins Jan. 16.
