During the week of Jan. 1-6, Big Island police arrested 19 motorists for drunken driving. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.

During the week of Jan. 1-6, Big Island police arrested 19 motorists for drunken driving. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona and South Hilo, 6 each; Puna and Ka‘u, 2 each; and Hamakua, North Kohala and South Kohala, 1 each.

So far this year, there have been 19 DUI arrests compared to 18 during the same period last year, an increase of 5.6 percent.

There have been 13 major accidents so far this year compared to 22 during the same period last year, a decrease of 40.9 percent.

So far this year, there have been no traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island, nor were there any traffic deaths during the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
