Kamehameha already knows what it has in Casey Poe. She’s gotten a lot of help so far this season from Riana Arima, a sophomore guard who’s taken quickly to her new role.
Poe, a 5-foot-10 junior, scored 19 points Tuesday night and Arima added 17 as the Warriors turned back Keaau 49-32 in a Big Island Interscholastic Federation girls basketball game at Kamehameha’s Koaia Gym.
Behind Poe and Arima, the defending Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II champion Warriors are off to a 3-0 start. It’s little surprise that Poe, the reigning BIIF East Player of the Year, has scored in double figures in all three victories, averaging 20.6 points per game. She had a high of 28 in a win over Ka’u.
The 5-7 Arima came off the bench last season and is playing well as one of Kamehameha’s three new starters. She collected a team-high 16 points in a victory at Waiakea on Saturday, following that up with another solid effort against the Cougars (1-2). She is averaging 16.3 ppg while drilling a perimeter shot or attacking the basket off the dribble.
“So far both Casey and Riana have lived up to our expectations on both ends of the court,” said Kamehameha head coach Garrett Arima, Riana’s father and a former Waiakea High standout who went on to play at NCAA Division III Pomona Pitzer for then coach Greg Popovich. The highly respected Popovich is now the head coach for the San Antonio Spurs.
Kamehameha visits Pahoa today and then it will go for a third victory against a Division I team when its visits Hilo on Saturday.
Taylor Pocock scored 10 points for the Keaau and Maedina Ongais-Kilaulani had eight.
Kamehameha won the JV game 40-15.

Waiakea 57, Ka’u 19: Junior guard Shaila Apele poured in 22 points for the visiting Warriors, who improved to 1-2.
Casey Koi, Denisha Navarro and Piilani Peralta each scored three points for the Trojans (1-2).
In the JV game, Waiakea defeated Ka’u 47-34 behind 24 points from Elyse Hasegawa and 10 from Mikaela Martinez. Kerrilyn Domondon led the Trojans with 22 points.

Hilo 63, Pahoa 20: Junior Aliyah Pana scored a game-high 17 points as the visiting Vikings ran their record to 3-0.
Macey Mokuhalii and Randi Berinobis each scored six points for the Daggers (0-3).
In Hilo’s 51-10 JV victory, Kaiana Yamabe scored 15 points.

Kohala 44, Kealakehe 32: Senior point guard Sheana Cazimero scored a team-high 17 points in Kailua-Kona as the Cowgirls earned their first victory of the year
Freshman Tezrah Antonio added 13 points for the Cowgirls (1-2), who led 20-14 at halftime before pulling away late in the game.
Kehau Lee scored a game-high 18 points for the Waveriders (0-3).
In the JV game, Kohala defeated Kealakehe 57-22 behind the freshman tandem of Jenny Fong (22 points) and Briana Harrison (14 points). Ashlyn Cabatbat and Sosefina Kalani scored seven points apiece for Kealakehe.

Konawaena 59, Hawaii Prep 20: Freshman guard Chanelle Molina scored a game-high 17 points, and senior guard Hoku Liftee added 15 as the Wildcats improved to 3-0 with their victory in Waimea.
Junior Tiana Bertelmann-Tabac led the Ka Makani (2-1) with seven points.

Honokaa 64, Laupahoehoe 31: Alika Alip led a balanced Honokaa scoring attack with 10 points as the Dragons improved to 1-1 with their road victory.
Zach Hale and Darus Ignacio added nine points apiece, and Keahi Esquerra had eight.
Justin Jose scored a team-high 11 points for the Seasiders (0-3).
