Everyone is invited to a Spay Day Rally from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Mooheau Park Bandstand in downtown Hilo.

There will be free door prize drawings, an “Ask a Veterinarian’ booth, a silent auction fundraiser for the nonprofit Hui Pono Holoholona, a drawying for a free spay/neuter surgery, music by Dennis & Christy Soares Entertainment, and other activities.

“Come show your support for a truly low-cost/no-cost spay/neuter program for our island’s dogs and cats,” said spokesman Frannie Pueo. Visit www.hphhawaii.org.

“Our community is in crisis with unwanted litter births of dogs and cats,” said Pueo. “Many are abandoned to starve, killed on our highways, or euthanized at shelters — over 1,000 each month.

“This is an unnecessary tragedy and preventable, had a truly low-cost/no-cost spay and neuter program been made available to all,” she said. “Hui Pono Holoholona walks the talk: As of this date, 3,000 animals have benefited from our spay/neuter clinics, that’s 3,000 fewer animals being killed, preventing the births of millions of unwanted kittens and puppies.

“Tomorrow’s count is up to you,” said Pueo. “Please spay and neuter your pets.”
