Debaters from 11 schools throughout the islands converged on the Parker School campus on Jan. 18 and 19 for the Neighbor Island Speech and Debate Qualifying Tournament. Contestants competed in speech, drama and debate events with the hope of qualifying for the state tournament in April. Kamehameha Schools – Kapalama campus took first place overall. Parker placed second.
The following Parker students qualified for the April state tournament: Jaren Ashcraft and Luke Potter (first place in Beginning Public Forum Debate), Michael Note and Kosuke Kume (second place in Beginning Public Forum Debate), Carrie Hiller (first place in Novice Lincoln-Douglas Debate), Sivan Najita (second place in Novice Lincoln-Douglas Debate), Tyler McCullough (second place in Championship Lincoln-Douglas Debate), and Paul Gregg (third place in Championship Lincoln-Douglas Debate).
The Parker debate team will next compete at the Mid-Pacific Institute Debate Qualifying Tournament on Oahu on Feb. 16.
