Jazlyn Afusia scored 13 points, Kamie Imai 12 and Kirsty Imai 10 to lead the University of Hawaii at Hilo to a 64-48 win over Chaminade University on Monday night.
The Pacific West Conference women’s basketball game was played at McCabe Gym in Honolulu.
The Vulcans improved to 11-7 overall and 8-4 in the PacWest. The struggling Silverswords fell to 1-16 and 1-11, respectively.
The Vulcans led by 18 points at the intermission and by as many as 23 in the second half before the Silverswords battled back and cut the deficit to 12 points.
Kristen Shimizu followed the Imai sisters with nine points in a balanced UHH attack.
Shana Kawakami led the hosts with 14 points and Markeshia Manning had 12.
“We did some good things in the first half,” Vulcan coach David Kaneshiro said. “We played hard defensively and Chaminade missed some layups.
“In the second half, we were kind of out-of-sync. I can’t put my finger on why, but we were a little inconsistent on both ends of the court.”
The Vulcans return to Hilo today and host third-place Cal Baptist on Saturday at UHH.
“Cal Baptist is a good team and they’re really playing well,” Kaneshiro said. “It’s a big challenge for us. But I know our girls won’t back down. It should be a really good game.”
In the late men’s game, the Vulcans (5-14, 3-8) took on the Silverswords (11-8, 8-3).
The UHH teams host Cal Baptist on Saturday night at the UHH Gym. The women play at 5 p.m. and the men at 7:30 p.m.
