Hot-shooting Chaminade University drained 16 of 34 3-pointers and had four players in double figures as the Silverswords ran past the University of Hawaii at Hilo 89-67 on Monday night.
The Pacific West Conference men’s basketball game was played in Honolulu.
Bennie Murray (3 treys), Lee Bailey and DeAndre Haskins each scored 17 points to lead the Silverswords (12-8 overall, 9-3 PacWest). Teammate Mike Green (4 treys) added 15 points.
The hosts hit 9 of 15 3-pointers in the first half and carried a 53-33 lead into the intermission.
“They shot the ball great in the first half,” UHH coach Jeff Law said. “They put it on us early and we just couldn’t come back. It was a tough game and they played really well.”
Senior Mychael Hearn topped the Vulcans with 15 points. Senior Michael Melonis and junior Oxone-Ross Mavungu each added 12 points. Hearn also had a team-high 10 rebounds.
Chaminade outscored UHH 36-34 in the second half, but the Silverswords’ hot-shooting in the first half gave them early momentum and sparked the victory.
The hosts also held a 47-40 rebounding edge with Haskins pulling down a game-high 15.
Law said the Vulcans need to regroup from the loss and play well in four straight home games before ending the regular season on the road against Brigham Young University-Hawaii on March 2 at Laie.
“We’re looking forward to getting back home and getting things back in the right direction,” Law said.
In Monday’s preliminary game, the Lady Vulcans defeated Chaminade 64-48 behind 13 points from Jazlyn Afusia, 12 from Kamie Imai and 10 from Kirsty Imai.
