John Aldaya, 72, of Pahala died Feb. 2 at home. Born in Pahala, he was a retired custodian for Kahakai Elementary School and member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses Naalehu Congregation. Memorial service 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23 at Punaluu Beach Park pavilion No. 1. Casual attire; no flowers. Survived by wife, Mildred Leilani Aldaya of Pahala; daughter, Sar’ai (Ezra) Keohuloa of Pahala; sister, Dorothy Aldaya of Kailua-Kona; five grandchildren; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. John Fontanilla Anicas, 91, of Hilo died Jan. 18 at Pohai Malama Hospice Care Facility in Hilo. Born in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, Philippines, he was a retired powerplant operator for Ka‘u Agribusiness and member of Pahala United Methodist Church and Hilo Parks & Recreation bowling league. Survived by wife, Emilia Damazo Anicas of Hilo; son, Steven (Tracy) Anicas of Honolulu; daughters, Melba (Darryl) Quiocho and Susan (Brian) Okamoto of Hilo; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; cousins, nieces and nephews. Dan “Danny Boy” Joseph Grotkin, 63, of Keaau died Feb. 6 at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo. Born in Iowa, he was a supervisor for the former Hamakua Sugar Co., a supervisor for Puna Flowers & Foliage and U.S. Marine Corps Vietnam veteran.
