Jose “Joe” Pereira Amaral, 90, of Kailua-Kona died Feb. 11 at Kona Community Hospital. Bornin Viseu, Portugal, he was a retired service manager and plumber. Survived by sons, Albert (Kaulu) Amaral of Kailua-Kona, Alipio Amaral of Bakersfield, Calif., and Anthony Amaral of Oakland, Calif.; daughters, Bina Amaral of St. Louis, Miss., and Carmen Amaral of Kailua-Kona; 12 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Daniel Seong Chang, 92, Kapaau, died Feb. 11 at his daughter’s residence. Born in Kohala, he was a retired welder for the Kohala Sugar Company and member of the Senior Citizens Club of Kohala and the Kohala Gateball Club. Michael Patrick “Obie” O’Brien, 68, formerly of Hilo, died Nov. 28 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, Colo. Born in Hanover, Mich., he was previously an independent contractor with the Hawaii Tribune-Herald, served in the Peace Corp, was a member of New Hope Christian Fellowship and later, Hilo Missionary Church, former president of the Gideon’s International and founder of Conquerors with Christ.
