Maggie Ayau of Hilo recently participated in Whitman Teaches the Movement, a partner project between Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash., the Walla Walla Public Schools, and the Southern Poverty Law Center, a facility based in Montgomery, Ala.
The goal of the project is to increase awareness about the civil rights movement among elementary school students. A group of more than 100 Whitman College students taught classes in local schools from Jan. 22-Feb. 1, focusing on different aspects of the movement in each grade.
In addition to teaching lessons, students had the opportunity to attend a panel of faculty and community experts who discussed the benefits and challenges of discussing the civil rights movement with students in 2013.
Ayau, the daughter of Judi and Greg Ayau, is a graduate of Kamehameha Schools Hawaii and is currently a junior English major at Whitman.
