Lia Galdeira scored 17 points and Dawnyelle Awa had 10, including 6 of 6 free throws, to lift eighth-seeded Washington State University to a 48-41 win over ninth-seeded Arizona State in the first round of the Pac 12 women’s basketball tournament on Thursday.
Galdeira and Awa, freshman out of Konawaena High School, led the Cougars (10-19) past the Sun Devils (13-17).
The Cougars play top-seeded Stanford at 3 p.m. today in the quarterfinals at Seattle.
Galdeira hit 7 of 15 field goals, including 2 of 3 3-pointers, and 1 of 3 free throws against Arizona State. She also had five rebounds.
Awa made 2 of 7 field goals but was deadly from the free-throw line in the closely contested game.
