Three University of Hawaii at Hilo players earned recognition on the all-Pacific West Conference basketball teams.
The PacWest announced the all-conference women’s and men’s teams Friday.
Vulcan junior Kamie Imai was named to the all-PacWest second team. The 5-foot-9 guard/forward averaged 11.1 points and 7.4 rebounds to help lead UHH to a fifth-place finish among eligible teams and berth in the inaugural conference tournament. She also led the team with 82 assists and 22 blocked shots.
Kirsty Imai, a senior and Kamie’s older sister, earned honorable mention. The 5-4 guard averaged 10 ppg to go with a team-leading 36 3-pointers.
The Lady Vulcans, under head coach David Kaneshiro, finished seventh overall in the 14-school standings with a 10-7 record. They were 13-11 overall.
UHH’s senior CJ Brown earned honorable mention honors on the all-PacWest men’s teams. The 6-1 point guard led the Vulcans with 12.6 ppg and a team-high 97 assists. He also had 29 3-pointers and 41 steals while pulling down 3.2 rebounds per game.
The UHH men, under head coach Jeff Law, finished 12th out of 14 teams in the PacWest with a 4-13 record. The Vuls were 6-19 overall.
Kamehameha’s Poe
grabs February honor
Kamehameha basketball player Casey Poe has been named the Big Island Athlete of the Month for February.
The 5-foot-11 junior led the Warriors to the state Division II girls basketball championship, scoring a game-high 28 points and dominating overall play in the final against Honokaa. She also hit a last-second shot against the Dragons in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation D-II title game, lifting the Warriors to a two-point win at Kealakehe.
The soft-spoken Poe, the two-time BIIF D-II player of the year, was named the state D-II tournament’s most outstanding player.
For the year, Poe averaged 18 points and 8.7 rebounds per game while leading Kamehameha to its fifth straight BIIF title and second state D-II title in the past three seasons under head coach Garrett Arima.
The Big Island athlete of the month program is sponsored by Don’s Grill, under owner Don Hoota. The athlete of the month as well as athlete and sportsperson of the year programs were founded by the late Jack Matsui.
Members of the selection committee are Hugh Clark, Ramon Goya, Stan Costales and chairman Bill O’Rear.

Keaukaha seeks
canoe paddlers
Keaukaha Canoe Club is inviting men and women who have no outrigger canoe paddling or racing experience to join its novice paddling program.
To learn more or to sign on as a new paddler, contact Mike Ben at 315-5706 or come down to the Keaukaha Canoe Club Halau located on the immediate eastside of the officials’ stand at the Hilo Bayfront.
Ben is there Monday through Thursday at 5 p.m.
Baseball alumni league
The Big Island Baseball Alumni League for ages 18 and over will run from August to September. It is for old-timers or recent graduates itching to shake off the rust and play ball.
