Inmate dies at Halawa prison
HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii prisons officials say a 32-year-old inmate serving a 20-year attempted murder sentence has died at Halawa Correctional Facility.
Spokeswoman Toni Schwartz for the Hawaii Department of Public Safety said Tuesday the man died in his cell on Monday.
Schwartz says the man was being held alone in a special holding unit in the facility.
The death was ruled a suicide.
Boat harbors being repaired
HONOLULU (AP) — The tsunami that devastated Japan occurred two years ago, and while repairs to Hawaii’s boat harbors have been ongoing, more needs to be done.
Some of Hawaii’s boat harbors have been transformed since the March 11, 2011, tsunami, while others remain much the same after hundreds of boats were ripped off their moorings.
The Keehi Marine Center ended up losing more than 140 slips. The nearby Keehi Small Boat Harbor, the state’s second largest facility, lost 40 slips.
The tsunami caused more than $2 million in damage in the harbor.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources says about 95 percent of reconstruction to the harbor has been completed.
While some harbors have been transformed, other landmarks like the Kona seawall remain unrepaired because of permitting issues.
Lockdown lifted at Maui schools
WAILUKU, Maui (AP) — A lockdown at two schools on Maui was lifted after no gunman was found.
The lockdown was lifted Monday after about one-and-a half-hours.
Maui High School and Kahului Elementary School were placed on lockdown status after police say an anonymous person called and reported seeing a man with a firearm jumping over the high school fence.
Police responded at 10:51 a.m. and did a room-by-room search.
Maui-Phoenix flight is diverted
HONOLULU (AP) — A US Airways flight from Maui to Phoenix diverted to Honolulu after crew members noticed a problem with one of the plane’s pressurization and air conditioning kits.
Airline spokesman Todd Lehmacher said the red-eye flight was less than halfway to Phoenix when its crew decided to be cautious and turn the plane around.
It landed in Honolulu early Tuesday without incident. Nobody was hurt.
Lehmacher said the Boeing 757 had two kits, and one was malfunctioning.
Half the plane’s 166 passengers were slated to depart Tuesday night, while the other half were rebooked on other airlines.
Man drowns on Maui
WAILUKU, Maui (AP) — A man who was found face-down in waters off Maui has died.
KHON-T says rescue crews got a report Monday of a 28-year-old missing fisherman at Pilali Bay.
The local man was found about 100 yards offshore in surf that was about 10 feet at the time. He was brought to shore and pronounced dead.
Also Monday, a 60-year-old Japanese woman was pulled from the waters of Kapalua Bay. She was with her husband and son snorkeling at the bay. She was reported in critical condition.
A 55-year-old woman from Canada also was reported in critical condition after being pulled from the water near Ka’anapali Villas.
