Somehow, Kealakehe’s softball team enjoyed a four-run lead Wednesday at home even though the Waveriders committed three errors allowed seven unearned runs in one inning.
But the defensive miscues continued, and this time, Konawaena didn’t let Kealakehe off the hook, piling up six hits in an 11-run fifth inning that carried the Wildcats to a 20-18 win over the Waveriders in a Big Island Interscholastic Federation contest.
In the decisive inning, Saxon Nagata drilled a two-run double, and Kaua Mitchell followed with a two-run single. Syleesia Jose, Jayssa Grace, Chryssa Dacalio and Bethany Batangan had an RBI apiece as Konawaena took a 20-15 lead over a Kealakehe team that committed 10 errors.
Mitchell finished 4-for-6 with five RBIs and three runs scored. Jose was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, and Nagata finished 2-for-6 as the Wildcats improved to 1-0 in the BIIF and 2-1 overall.
Sophomore Shyla Victor, who finished the game in the circle after relieving Batangan with one out in the bottom of the third, earned the victory. In 4 2/3 innings, she gave up nine runs — six earned — on seven hits, striking out one and walking five.
Victor gave up a three-run homer to Arlene Musrasrik that made it 20-18 in the sixth inning before holding the Waveriders (1-0, 3-1) scoreless in the seventh.
Kealakehe sophomore Lina Palmer-Kahananui, who pitched the final three innings, took the loss. She gave up 11 runs — six earned — on eight hits and three walks.
In four innings, Ashley Isisaki gave up nine runs, but only three were earned as Kealakehe made three errors that led to seven unearned runs in the third. She struck out six and walked six.
At the plate, Isisaki, Palmer-Kahananui and Kawailehua Deuz each had two RBIs. Isisaki and Tavian Taketa both went 2-for-4, while Leisha Nakagawa and Kawailehua Deuz were 2-for-3.

• Kohala 19, Hawaii Prep 6: The Cowgirls took advantage of six walks and two hitbatsmen to score 13 first-inning runs, and sophomore Ashlyn Van Zandt pitched a complete-game eight-hitter at Kamehameha Park in Kapaau.
Senior Tiani Luga stroked a two-run single in the first, and Ryah Manning laced a two-run double in a six-run fourth as Kohala improved to 0-1 in the BIIF and 1-2 overall.
Sheana Cazimero, who went 2-for-3, also drove in two runs, and Kyrah Sol added a run-scoring double.
Van Zandt allowed seven runs on seven hits, striking out four and walking three.
Kawena Lim-Samura, who pitched 3 2/3 innings, took the loss for Ka Makani (0-1, 0-4). She gave up eight hits and two walks while striking out eight.
Camille Kiyota finished a home run short of the cyle, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs.
