The Honokaa United Methodist Church invites everyone to join in Holy Week services starting with Palm Sunday, March 24, at 10 a.m. The Maundy Thursday communion service, March 28, will be at 5 p.m. and the Good Friday service, March 29, will be at noon.

On Easter Sunday, the congregation will be joining the Salvation Army for a sunrise service at 6 a.m. on the Salvation Army front lawn in Honokaa. The Easter Resurrection Sunday worship service will be at 10 a.m. at the church. For this service, folks are invited to bring cut flowers to decorate a special cross. Everyone is welcome. Paauilo School is currently conducting kindergarten registration for children born in the year 2008 who live in the Paauilo district. Parents are required to provide a birth certificate and proof of physical residence in order to receive a registration packet.

The Ahualoa Community Association will be hosting a meeting regarding fire hydrants and other related issues following the death in December of one of the Ahualoa residents in a house fire. The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 19, at 7 p.m. in the large conference room at NHERC. Representatives of the Mayor’s Office, Fire Department, Department of Water Supply and Councilwoman Valerie Poindexter have been invited.
All residents of Ahualoa and other interested community members are encouraged to attend. The addition of the new water tank above Ahualoa and the installation of a new transmission line down Old Mamalahoa Highway have raised many questions about the availability of more water. Residents are also interested in the planning process in relation to the new transmission line.
Your input is very important to the future development of our community. This is a chance to ask your elected representatives and county fire and water officials all your questions.

Lazar Bear announces that bluegrass/country folk/gospel icons Robin and Linda Williams, stars of Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion,” will perform with the support of B97 at the Honokaa People’s Theatre on March 30. The duo’s Oahu, Maui and Big Island shows will feature autographed guitar auctions, with the proceeds to benefit Hawaii Public Radio. Tune in to the supporting radio stations for details.

Honokaa Elementary School is accepting nominations to identify students for gifted and talented services for the academic school year 2013/2014. Nominations for students currently in grades 2-5 will be accepted until April 28. Nomination forms will be distributed to teachers. Forms will also be available in the office for parents who would like to nominate their child. The state Department of Education defines gifted and talented as children and youths whose superior performance or potential indicates possible giftedness in intellectual, creative, psychomotor ability or talent in the performing and visual arts.
The G/T services at Honokaa Elementary are provided in the general classrooms through differentiated instruction such as the accelerated language arts SFA program.

A community workshop is happening this Saturday at the Mala‘ai Garden at Waimea Middle Public Charter School. This workshop called “Victory Gardening with Containers” is offered by Jan Wizinowich, master gardener, from 1 to 4 p.m.
If you have always wanted a garden, but had no idea where to begin, container gardening is for you. Not only will you be munching on your own delicious vegetables, but you will be making a positive contribution to our precious island home by moving us closer to sustainable living.
The class will be a combination of hands-on (create and plant your own container) and sharing of resources, and will include garden planning, info on container types and construction, soil basics, care and maintenance. Malama Hawaii Nei coordinators send their sincere appreciation to everyone who made Braddah Smitty’s eighth annual Laupahoehoe Music Festival a success this year. Thank you, Hawaii Island community and visitors, for supporting this special event. Despite the threat of rainy weather it was a beautiful day and they hope everyone enjoyed themselves.
They will continue to award our local students college scholarships and provide funding to our other community programs as a result of the festival. They thank the entertainers, individuals, organizations, government agencies and businesses. They look forward to seeing you all again next year.
