Police responding to a 8:38 p.m. call determined that the 53-year-old woman was on the mauka side shoulder of Hawaii Belt Road (Route 19) fronting the crosswalk at Pukihae Street when she was struck by a southbound 2005 Kia 4-door sedan.
The woman, who has not been identified by police, was taken to Hilo Medical Center where she died at 11:58 a.m.
The driver of the car, a 37-year-old Volcano man, and his 3-year-old son were not injured.
Police have opened a negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy.
It’s unknown if speed, alcohol or drugs were involved.
Anyone with information is asked to call Officer Paul Kim at 333-9708. Police ask that anyone following the Kia into Hilo to call police.
The woman’s death is the 10th official traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared to seven at the same time last year.
