Parker fourth-grade students held a book sale last week on campus to raise money for Smile Train. Smile Train is an organization that funds cleft surgeries for children in developing nations.
The students were moved to hold this fundraiser after, as a class, they read the novel “Wonder” by R.J. Palacio. The theme of the novel is kindness.
It’s about a boy born with a severe facial deformity who goes to school for the first time as he’s entering fifth grade.
Parker fourth-grade teacher Tanya Everts said, “As a class we have taken a kindness pledge for the year of 2013,” and the students working the sale offered customers the opportunity to do the same when paying for their books.
The children set a goal of raising $250, which covers the cost of one surgery, but ended up raising $600. For more information, please visit www.parkerschool.net.
