Hawaii Avocado Fest on April 13

Hawaii Avocado Fest on April 13

Delicious and good for you, local avocados will be the star of the show at the seventh annual Hawaii Avocado Festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 13.

The free community, Zero Waste event is on the lawn fronting the Sheraton Kona Resort & Spa at Keauhou Bay on Kaleiopapa Road.

Nicknamed the “alligator pear” because of its shape, skin and rough texture, avocados pack a nutritional punch and are a source of healthy monounsaturated fat.

Festival organizer Randyl Rupar says the festival celebrates the versatile fruit and “supports island food sustainability in a fun and informative way.”

Event festivities include educational displays on growing avocados; an avocado recipe contest and culinary demonstration; free avocado sampling; arts, crafts and food booths; healing arts; and a full lineup of performing arts.

Recipe and vendor entry forms are posted at www.avocadofestival.org.

Also on display will be original festival art by Jean Love and event T-shirts. For information, contact Rupar at 936-5233.

The festival is sponsored by Sanctuary of Mana Ke‘a Gardens, Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers-West Hawaii and Sheraton Kona Resort & Spa.

Healthy Keikifest set for April 13

The 14th annual Waimea Healthy Keikifest will feature more than 35 hands-on activities for keiki ages 3 to 12. This year’s event will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at the Parker Ranch Center.

“While keiki have fun learning about safety, health, and nutrition, etc., they’ll earn tickets to get their face painted, balloons and bouncer,” said spokeswoman Sharnell Kalahiki.
