During the week of March 18-24, Hawaii Island police arrested 31 motorists for drunk driving. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Four were under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 14; Kona, 13; South Kohala, 2; Puna and Ka‘u, 1 each.
So far this year, there have been 308 DUI arrests compared to 334 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.8 percent.
There have been 293 major accidents so far this year compared to 358 during the same period last year, a decrease of 18.2 percent.
So far this year, there have been 11 official traffic fatalities compared to seven during the same period last year, an increase of 57.1 percent.
To date, two of those fatalities have been linked to drugs and none to alcohol.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
