HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii senators are pushing forward an initiative to allow the state to develop school lands through public-private partnerships.
The Senate Ways and Means Committee voted to advance the proposal on Wednesday.
Three House committees planned to debate the proposal the same day.
The idea has gained momentum in both chambers. Lawmakers in the House and Senate approved different versions of the bill earlier this month.
But lawmakers disagree about details of the initiative, such as how many initial pilot projects there should be and who should facilitate them.
The version that the senators approved creates a three-year pilot project under the lieutenant governor’s office.
Despite apparent consensus about the idea in the Legislature, some residents still oppose the initiative. They worry about how development might impact their communities.
