University of Hawaii at Hilo junior Corey Kozuma fired a 2-under 68 and was two shots off the lead Thursday after the opening round of the U.S. Intercollegiate in Palo Alto, Calif.
Teeing off on the back nine at Stanford Golf Club, Kozuma was the model of consistency. He bogeyed just one hole, and after a stretch that saw him par 10 straight holes, he notched birdies on nos. 7 and 8.
Led by Kozuma and Jamie Hall (71), the Vulcans (11-over 291) were 17th out of 18 teams at the Division I-laden tournament.
Seven players owned a share of the lead at 4-under. Kozuma was tied for 13th, while Hall was tied for 31st. UHH’s Dalen Yamauchi was at 75, while Kyeton Littel and Chris Shimomura each carded 77s.
Stanford (272), one of six teams to shoot under par, led by a shot. St. Mary’s (273), TCU (274), San Francisco (275) and San Jose State rounded out the top five.
Pepperdine was a stroke behind the Vuls in last.
